Summary: An unusual view on an obvious subject? Drabble quartet, post-ACoK.
She should have known nothing could frighten or startle him. Not even she, not even with this.

“So, so,” he says, his words indifferent, his tone mocking, his meaning glad. “That’s nice.”

“I don’t know how you manage it,” he complains, as he struggles to hold the bowl and stroke her forehead, as she does for him.

“I have two hands,” she snaps back, too tired and sick to be hurt or amused.

Perhaps this business of comfort by missing the point is catching, for he grins, all frustration gone. “That would help.”

They make her sit and put her feet up, resting for hours on end when she has other things to be doing. When she complains, they fetch the palace physician.

She sends away all the attendants, and sits alone, in silence – until there is a feather-light kiss on her hair. “I missed you this afternoon,” he says. “I had to stay awake and behave myself.”

She manages to hang on to the outrage and indignation that threatens to turn up the corners of her mouth and make her laugh, until he pulls the footstool out from under her feet and flops onto it.

When she’s really, properly laughing, he leans back against her legs. “It’s a good thing you like sitting.”

He doesn’t say anything, for a while, and she watches him anxiously. There are only three reasons why he’s ever silent, Eddis warned her, and none of those apply – she hopes – to this situation.

Then he juggles the bundle of blankets lightly from one arm to the other, and strokes the contents almost uncertainly, definitely gladly, with his hand.

There’s a fourth reason why he’s silent, now.
